Advice from the management:

Try and go to an agency rather than a school.

However, if the agency you go to is in a smaller town chances are that they will have to supplement their model bookings with the revenue from training models to stay in business and provide your area with modeling services.

Modeling schools have become controversial simply because some are very good and provide their clients will real opportunities they might not have had on their own, and, there are bad ones that don't do much of anything.

For women past their early 20s forget about being discovered and developed by a major agency and then flown to exotic locations for fabulous photo shoots. However, most agencies do take on new models that move into their territory and this fits most people.

So the first question to ask yourself is “what do I want to do?” If you are looking to become the next modeling superstar you will have one track, if not, then you will have a different plan to start your modeling career.

If you are going for super model status then do the following:

1) Make sure you are at least 5’6” and growing

2) Make sure you are under 22 years old

3) When you have met conditions 1 and 2 do a reality check
-a) Are your facial features regular and symmetrical?
-b) Do you have nice skin?
-c) Do people other than your mother, father, boyfriend, and modeling school salesperson tell you that you should model?

4) After passing the reality check set up a digital photo shoot where you take 25 head and 25 body shots with different outfits and expressions.

5) Edit your photo shoot down to the best 3 head and 2 body shots

6) Expose yourself to the new face scouts in the major agencies
-a) Look up how to contact new face scouts here
-b) E-mail your images to them
-c) Send actual photos in mail
-d) Go to all the open-calls in your area
-e) Enter modeling contests where the fees are low or free

7) Get signed by major agency, make lots of money, and have fun

If you are NOT going for super model status do the following:

1) Determine which type(s) of modeling are best suited for you based on the information on the home page.

2) Google the nearest modeling agencies to your location

3) Determine through websites and phone calls who to send pictures or if there are any open calls available

4) Organize photo shoot where you take at least 25 head and 25 body shots

5) Edit 50 images down to best 3 head and 2 body shots

6) E-mail, hand mail, or take images to your local agency

7) Get signed and make money

Is it true that legitimate agencies will pay for everything if they want me?

This simply depends on how much they want you.

Generally most agencies will not pay for your pictures, comp cards, digitization and enhancement of images, or travel expenses.

If, one the other hand, an agent in a major market such as New York, Los Angeles, or Italy is interested in signing you then there is a good chance they will pay for some of your up front expenses.

Even in most of these cases however the model must pay the agency back once she or he starts making money from bookings.

Sometimes a model will go overseas and work a lot only to return with very little in earnings because they were eaten up by the expenses the model incurred.
